WHAT IS BAMBOO STEM & LEAF EXTRACT?

There are more than a thousand different species of bamboo. The common bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) is one of the largest and most recognized bamboo species. It’s native to Southern China and parts of Southeast Asia. Bamboo is the richest plant source of silica (i.e., silicon dioxide)—silica plays important roles in plant vigor, growth, resistance to stress, and structural integrity. Bamboo has been used in Ayurveda, Chinese, Tibetan, and other healing traditions. In Ayurveda, the silica-rich exudate of bamboo is referred to as tabasheer, banslochan, or bamboo manna. Silicon is the third most abundant trace element in the human body. It has key roles in nail, hair, and skin health, which is why it is sometimes called a “beauty mineral.” Silicon is important for collagen synthesis and enzymes involved in supporting skin strength and elasticity. Silicon is also associated with the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans, important for healthy skin structure. Hair strands with higher silicon content tend to have lower falling rate and higher brightness. Nail health is also dependent on silicon levels, since it is one of the predominant minerals in their composition [1].*

BAMBOO STEM & LEAF EXTRACT FORMULATING PRINCIPLES AND RATIONALE

Average daily dietary intake of silicon is 20–50 mg for European and North American populations [2]. Our extract is standardized to contain not less than 70% Silica, meaning that a 20 mg amount provides 14 mg silica (i.e., silicon dioxide), which in turn corresponds to around 6.5 mg silicon. Within Ayurveda, silica-rich bamboo extracts (i.e., bamboo manna) are commonly dosed in the range of 250-500 mg daily, so the 20 mg serving would be a low amount.* We selected the low serving to augment dietary silica intake and to be complementary with other ingredients in our formulation (see Neurohacker Dosing Principles).
