Aoa. its a friendly request that drawing of anything that is living is prohibited in islam. and according to my understanding these smilies are representation of human face so these may be prohibited also and Allah knows best if these smilies are ok or not but we should remain on the safe side and being muslims we should not use them. if any of our servants or children dont obey us we become angry and feel insulted so same is the case with the commands of Allah we are His servants. and specialy while spreading islam try to avoid any act that goes agaist the rules of Allah

Narrated Said bin Abu Al-Hasan:

While I was with Ibn ‘Abbas a man came and said, “O father of ‘Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures.” Ibn ‘Abbas said, “I will tell you only what I heard from Allah’s Apostle . I heard him saying, ‘Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.’ ” Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn ‘Abbas said to him, “What a pity! If you insist on making pictures I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects.” Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 62 :: Hadith 110 Narrated Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) I bought a cushion having on it pictures (of animals). When Allah’s Apostle saw it, he stood at the door and did not enter. I noticed the sign of disapproval on his face and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! I repent to Allah and His Apostle. What sin have I committed?’ Allah’s Apostle said. “What is this cushion?” I said, “I have bought it for you so that you may sit on it and recline on it.” Allah’s Apostle said, “The makers of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them, ‘Give life to what you have created (i.e., these pictures).’ ” The Prophet added, “The Angels of (Mercy) do not enter a house in which there are pictures (of animals).”

A salaam alaikum, excellent points mentioned in the article above, May Allah help our societies round the globe to incorporate those points and many more..

I could not help but smile how we react sometimes but indeed the statement below is sooooooooooo true

"our sisters through their shyness usually keep quiet about it.. that is, until you get a pretty loud one that storms in the mosque and sends you hate mails, or even worse takes you to the union court"

Apologies to those brothers that may have fallen a victim to statement above but we just need to always find ways to get sisters involved!!
