Shouldn’t talk that does not benefits nor harm be ok and sometimes even desirable with family and friends for the sake of bonding (of course avoiding excess and excluding gossip).
Trying to be 100% productive all the time can have detrimental effects on our mental health. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is hangout with our buddies to blow off some steam.

All great religions, prophets and great teachers give the same advice for the benfit of humanity. I hail from India and I want to share here the advice on avoiding vain talk by a Weavedr-Sage of the first century before the common era. He is known for his book of 1330 couplets and there is a full chapter of 10 couplets on the importance of avoiding/refraining from vai or useless talk. He is known by the name Tiruvalluvar and his book is Tirukkural (Sacred book of coulets). Here are the 10 couplets in essence: as translated by Rev. G. U. Pope, a Christian Missionary who was in India in the 19th century):
The essence of chapter verses
191. He who utters useless words that many hate will be despised by all.
192. Saying vain words in front of many people is worse than doing unwanted actions with friends.
193. The empty statement of one who utters useless things declares that he is ignorant.
194. The words devoid of profit or pleasure which a man speaks are inconsistent with virtue. So, such a person will get removed from goodness.

195. If the good speak vain words they stand to lose their eminence and excellence.
196. A man who parades forth his empty words should not be called a man. Call him the chaff of men instead.
197.Let the wise if they will, speak things without excellence; it will be well for them not to speak useless things.
198. The wise who seek after rare pleasures will not speak words that have not much weight in them.
199. Those wise men who are without faults and are freed from ignorance will not even forgetfully speak things that profit not.
200. Say only words that are useful when speaking; Do not speak words that are useless.
