Basically music and use of musical instruments are poisonous for the soul in nature whether you hear the so-called islamic songs by mahir zain or sami yusuf its completely against sunnah and hadith that mentions the silk , zina & musical instruments. You can watch the. Video that is part mufti menk’s lecture https://youtu.be/phI9DBRZ45Q

Like I even used to have Enrique’s songs as my Fajr alarms! (God forgive me! Lol). I somehow realized music was messing up with my head and was dragging me down when I wanted to be free.
And this is exactly how you can tell that it can’t be approved of by Allah SWT-the difference giving up on it makes in your life and eemaan. I say this with reference to some schools of thought that say music is permissible. And maybe because you quit with a spirit of sacrifice for Allah SWT, Allah does indeed compensate you with a better life! Subhan Allah and Jazak Allah Khayr for sharing!

Personally I used to be addicted to Korean Pop music especially. I would listen to it for hours on end, neglecting many obligatory duties that I have as a Muslim (I.e praying, reading Quran, etc) and as an individual (I.e showering, studying, eating, etc).

I have attempted to quit K-pop many times before, but my desires overtook me each and every time. It was only when I became sick and tired of listening to music and wasting time, that I started to have a strong urge to just abandon music.

It has been more than a month now since so last listened to music, deliberately. I say ‘deliberately’ because music is literally everywhere (shops, radio, television, school, etc) and it is nearly impossible to escape from it.

Alhamdulillah I have also reaped quite a number of benefits from not listening to music. There are no more song tunes and lyrics stuck in my head.

I’ve been listening to Mishary Alafasy’s Quran recitation ever since, and now Surah Mulk is stuck in my head, which is good!

In Sha Allah I can keep this up and stay away from music for the rest of my life 😄

Jazakallah khair sister,

I would say that personally the challenges I faced in quitting music (and continue to face) is more social than it is my own desire to listen to it. The greatest challenge however comes when there are either party’s, weddings or events I am invited to where music is present. It’s difficult to reject such invitations and feel like you’re missing out, and so the challenge is feeling like you can’t be the same or “have a good time” because of your choices. And so, I would say that’s the major challenge, that you will be surrounded by this temptation, it’s inevitable. The battle is how you strive to distance yourself as much as you can.

I hope that answered your question.

Maryam

Assalamu alaykum,

I once learned that “hearing isn’t the same as listening”. The understanding is that, although we don’t consciously listen to the music, we will be in environments such as a shopping center, restaurant or cars for example where music is played. We have no control over that.

Apologies but I’ve completely forgotten what scholar once said this, but i can assure you it is a reliable source from the lectures I’ve watched :)
