Several good reminders here, ma sha Allah: You can’t do it all; Don’t over-schedule; Children learn best when they feel secure and accepted.

Under “Don’t overschedule”, it says: “Focus on Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.” I read a beautiful example in a book on Aakhirah. It said (in my words):
IF YOU ONLY HAD A PIECE OF BREAD AND YOUR CHILDREN WERE HUNGRY, YOU WOULDN’T FEED IT TO THE BIRDS. IF YOU HAD A SINGLE FLASK OF WATER AND A DESERT TO CROSS, YOU WOULDN’T WASH YOUR FEET WITH IT. IF YOU HAVE A SINGLE LIFETIME TO EARN AAKHIRAH, YOU WOULDN’T SPEND IT ON UNIMPORTANT MATTERS.”
Reading, writing and arithmetic are important (and need to be learnt) but they cannot be the FOCUS of a Muslim parent. With a zillion distractions, pressures, and temptations around, and a life fleeting by every moment, we need to focus on the BEST and MOST important thing: LEARNING AND PRACTISING OUR DEEN. The Prophet saw said that the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it. Learning the Quran in depth, learning the Seerah in detail, learning Arabic, learning about and imbibing the pillars of Eamaan — our only salvation in the times of Dajjal — need to be our FOCUS.
Allahumma waffiqnaa limaa tuhibbu wa tardhaa.

I dont think umm maryam was suggesting not to teach children to read…..she just meant not to waste time…obviously teaching our children to be prolific readers is an essential part of fulfilling what Allah wants of us to guide our children to and being able to write accurately and eloquently is an essential skill also especially if the child wishes to take part in the spreading of Allahs deen……islam is to be spread and established not just practised as an individual in their private life.
islam must be presented to out children in interesting and memorable ways so that it becomes settled firmly in their hearts and they need much love and encouragement from both parents to build their confidence …..the problem too often with homeschooling parents is they become burnt out, irritable and neglectful of their children’s emotional needs………take a break to reflect because if you dont you may end up with very disgruntled young men and women who feel they were not given a good start in life as they feel ill equipped to face and take their place in the world…a place of terrible fitna and suffering for much of the ummat. We need pious muslims but we need useful ones too! We don’t want a generation of kids who sit at home worshipping Allah and do nothing to change the reality of the ummat’s problems. May Allah guide us all to taufiq in this life and the next.
