Good question! You’re right, we aren’t supposed to fast on the day of Eid and actual fasting is just 9 days. This article explains why they were referred to as “ten” days in the hadith: http://seekersguidance.org/ans-blog/2012/10/20/fasting-during-the-first-nine-days-of-dhul-hijja/.

Quoted from the article:
“Note that the ‘ten days’ in the various hadiths refer to the first nine days of Dhu’l Hijja, since it is agreed upon that it is prohibitively disliked and sinful to fast on the tenth day which is the day of Eid al-Adha. Imam Ibn Sirin used to dislike the phrase “fasting the ten of Dhu’l Hijja”; since it gives an impression that the tenth day is also included. However, the majority of the scholars do not see any problem with this phrase, saying that “ten” refers to fasting those days in which it is permitted to do so – i.e. the first nine days. The phrase “ten” is used in a metaphorical sense. (See: Nawawi, Al-Minhaj sharh Sahih Muslim & Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, Lata’if al-Ma’arif p: 330)”

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) used to fast on the ninth of Dhu’l-Hijjah and related that fasting the ten days is the equivalent of fasting a year, and standing in prayer at night (for the ten nights) is the equivalent of standing on the night of Qadr [at-Tirmidhi].
Assalamu’alaikum JazakAllahu khair 4 da article….i pray 2 Allah that he keeps us always on islaam,imaan..& gives us sincere intentions…i got this 1 doubt dat in the above mentioned ahadeeth its said abt fasting 10 days is equivalent to 1yr..so 10th day is EID DAY ,we are nt suppose to fast on that day..can u pls clear it..
