@Muslimah – No problem at all :). JazakiAllah khair for your duas. Ameen to them.

When it’s best for us to sleep and wake up is really unique and specific to each of us depending on our bodies’ requirements, responsibilities, and circumstances. So you’d be the best person to assess how it is best for you to manage it. That said, there are general tips we advise on, e.g., staying up after Fajr till ishraq (sunrise) and doing some form of dhikr, reading Qur’an or even something else to benefit from the blessings of that time. Otherwise, each person’s schedule will be dependent on their own needs. You would best know how much sleep your body needs, so keep a close track of it to understand your body’s needs. Food and exercise will also affect your sleep and vice versa.

We have a host of articles on these topics that will help you, in sha Allah. I’m sharing all of them with you here. I know they’re quite a few, but please read them at your own pace:

Regarding your second question, I can understand how it can be. These are really trying moments of our patience and akhlaaq (manners/conduct). What really helps in such cases is when we better understand the status of our parents in Islam, their rights upon us, and the immense reward we get for respecting them. The more conscious we are of all that, the easier it is for us to deal gently with them.

I know it’s easier said than done. And you have to be easy on yourself as changing this habit of being quick to anger or losing one’s patience takes a lot of time (and surprisingly, patience :)). It’s not a habit we can change in a few days or even just a month; it really takes much time and one improves gradually. Think of it like wanting to lose weight. ;)

Here are some articles that would help you with practical tips. Again, please read at your own pace:

Wa alaikumussalaam warahmatullah Muslimah,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

You do not necessarily have to sleep before tahajjud. Though it is preferred that you do, it is not a requirement for your tahajjud to be valid or accepted. You can read more about that here: http://www.askimam.org/public/question_detail/18254.

Here are some practical tips to overcome the sleepiness during prayer at the time of taraweeh:
– Firstly, keep a light stomach. Don’t fill yourself up too much between iftar and taraweeh.
– Do a really quick 5-10 minute workout right before isha/taraweeh. It could be some push-ups, crunches, jumping jacks, etc. You’ll be warmed up, blood circulating, heart pumping, and awake for taraweeh, in sha Allah. :)
– Splash your face with cold water in between your taraweeh, if needed.
– Sometimes, a quick power nap (20-minute nap) helps. It’s something one needs to train themselves to be able to do. If you can have a quick power nap, that would really help as well.

I hope this helps!

@Fatma – Just heard back from team members. If you’re speaking of Birmingham, UK, then local mosques provides the most accurate time-tables. Try this one: http://www.greenlanemasjid.org/
