Trials and tribulations are part and parcel of this worldly life. We can’t escape them, but we can learn how to deal with them.

Having negative thoughts as a result of tribulations can be severely detrimental to your physical and mental health, and your overall productivity. So how do we deal with a heart burdened with grief?

We need to remember that Shaytaan will lead us to despair and even tempt us to commit sin at our times of weakness. Whatever adversities we face, it is important to work through the heartbreak to improve our emotional and physical well-being and regain control of our day-to-day life. Here are a few tips that I find useful.

1. Focus on The Eternal instead of the temporary: Reconnecting with Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)

Human beings need someone, perpetually. Despite being the sturdiest creation on the planet possessing a perfect mental composure, we are in a constant exigency of having someone accompany us like Eve raḍyAllāhu 'anha (may Allāh be pleased with her) was created for Adam 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) or Haroon 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) was sent to help Musa 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him). Complication starts the moment we try finding an eternal companion in this world. The moment our heart believes that “this” person is the best, free of any imperfection, and will be with us forever, is when the heartbreaks, failures, and disappointments arrive. There’s nothing surprising in this because if our heart is attached to a fleeting thing, it will, inevitably end.

Don’t we need someone who is with us and comprehends everything we are going through? Someone who is with us at 4 am when we are crying ceaselessly and feeling vulnerable?

There is One who never misunderstands and misinterprets any of our feelings and emotional burdens, and is there for us every day of the week, and every minute of the day.

Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says,

“And we have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him and We are closer to him than his jugular vein.” [Qur’an: Chapter 50, Verse 16]

But if we serve ourselves purely just for Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) and we refocus our heart so our living is just for Him, you will be amazed to see how you become content and resilient, even if your life is surrounded with battles and traumas. The immutable belief will prevail in your heart and ignite absolute solace and strength.

Action Point: Let that emotional release be done on the prayer mat – cry, cry, cry, and plead with Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) for the perfect solution, and to bless you with patience and strength. Talk with Him and discover every possible way to reunite with your Lord subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He). Shift your focus in weak moments from the things you’re missing, to connecting with The Eternal One subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He).

2. Monitor your inner thoughts and adjust them

Now that you have revived your relationship with Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), the very next move is to reflect on your thoughts. Your inner-self needs to be pure and content in order for your outer-self to glow and function adequately. So, keep a track of your thoughts, and whenever they indicate gloominess and negativity, don’t give in those memories and desolate yourself, but retreat by remembering Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He). Let your brain know that it is worthless to dwell about despairing thoughts and there is more to life. Practice, practice, and practice it continuously until your brain is accustomed to the chain of positivity.

Self-reflection is extremely important for us to become aware of ourselves and is a way we can control our hearts from despairing when a calamity occurs. Don’t ask questions like, “Why did this happen to me?” However, asking questions like “What did I learn from this?” or “How has this changed me?” are much more effective in pulling your heart from sadness and grief.  Tell yourself continuously, “I am accountable for my behavior and I have to be the best version of myself.” The ability to confront yourself and admit to yourself the areas you need to grow and improve will lead to a sense of inner peace.

Action Point: Self-reflection can be done anywhere. Find your ideal method; this could be sitting quietly alone and thinking, or writing down your thoughts and goals in a chart.

3. Release your emotions through the right source

Try to find one specific reliable person in your life who will listen to you without expectation or judgment. This could be a trustworthy childhood friend who has wisdom and is capable of giving sound advice, your spouse or even a therapist trained in such matters. Withholding negativity within your heart could lead to more heartache and decreased mental well-being.

Action Point: Write down what you want to speak about beforehand, as this “self-talk” is also a form of release of negative emotions. Try writing those depressing thoughts on a paper and then tear them into pieces as a symbol of letting those thoughts go. There is research that indicates that this trick actually helps people forget harsh moments.

4. Find a passion that soothes your heart adequately

Okay, so you’ve got the cooking and cleaning to do, scheduled with those dull meetings and excessive assignments which are to be submitted by 11:59 pm, you have been cramming all day for the upcoming midterm exams but your heart is still gloomy due to all sorrows which are not easily forgettable.

An exciting change may just be what the doctor ordered! There are a wealth of fun, halal and inexpensive activities that you can become passionate about. More often than not, we find ourselves rundown with the mundane everyday tasks of life, which don’t stop even when we feel heartache or burden from our problems. Although we can’t make the negativity disappear, we can take control of our mental health and engage in active leisure which will help alleviate stress and anxiety. You may initially feel like that time spent on hobbies could be spent on ‘more important’ tasks, but giving your mind a break will allow you to be focussed, refreshed, and your heart will get just a little bit lighter.

Action point: The best hobbies are those that draw you closer to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He). This could be a hike to ponder over the beautiful creation of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), some Islamic classes to be in the company of good people, or exercise to make your body strong for worship.

5. Meet those who have less than you

Often during a catastrophe, we tend to think we are the only ones who are going through a hard time. This is because the pain can be consuming and it’s hard to think that someone else would understand what we feel. Our issues and troubles start growing so tremendously that we never ponder on the people who are dealing with something greater. The Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said,

“Look at those who are beneath you and do not look at those who are above you, for it is more suitable that you should not consider as less the blessing of Allah.” [Sunan ibn Majah]

Looking at those who have less than us, or are going through a more heavier burden automatically invites gratitude into our hearts. Subsequently, being grateful changes our whole perception about life. Even when it seems like there is no good in your life, thank Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) for the little things you still have. Say “Alhamdulillah” at your lowest, make this a habit and even if the situation is dark, you will feel positive because of that light in your heart.

Action point: Alter the mindset of despair by visiting someone who is sick. Hospitals and care homes usually have volunteer programmes especially for those who are in end-of-life care. Another way is to go and seek out a homeless person, especially if you live in cities where the homeless population is high. Buy them some food and listen to their battles and worries: you will definitely feel that you have a great deal to thank Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) for.

6. As cliche’ as it sounds…but learn to have hope. It works!

When my dad was thirteen years old, his family was afflicted with poverty. It was so severe that they even became homeless at one point. Let me tell you what my grandma used to say to him:

“Tanveer beta (son), do you see the skies in nights and how dark it gets? Does the darkness stay forever? No, right? The sun rises and shines brightly. Sometimes beta, it is worth waiting for the sunshine so don’t dishearten yourself but put your hope in Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He). You WILL see wonders, in sha Allah!

How beautiful is this? See how, in the midst of calamities, she tried to build hope in his heart? Once we have hope in Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), no-one can ever put us down. Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says,

“And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” [Quran: Chapter 65, Verse 3]

This trivial life can never bring eternal happiness. There will be severe tests and various trials but we must stay positive and hopeful. Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) is with the people who are patient. Stay strong because your attitude and behavior matter. Stay strong because patience during troubles and worries will pay off immeasurably in the end. Stay strong because your motivation isn’t this world, but the pleasure of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He). Stay strong because Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) sees it all and He will help you.

Have you seen a passionate gardener, who not only looks after the plants, but also talks and sings to them? He is always concerned about the plants’ health and yield. He ties the weak stems to a metal rod in order to make them upright and strong. He uses herbicides to diminish undesirable plants which harms his garden. Whenever he sees the feeble plant becoming productive, he is filled with happiness, gives thanks to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) for it and shares the fruit with his family and friends.

Well, you are the gardener of your own body and soul; the knowledge you feed your body is the water and fertilizers, which are essential for the soul, fasting and consciousness of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) are the herbicides for eradicating desires, the metal rod is the food and drink for strengthening the healthy body. When the weak plant is well taken care of, the fruits would be loving yourself and others for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He).

We need to understand the need to fulfill “love for me”. Loving ourselves first might seem a little egotistical, but if the intention is to please Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), to serve people and diffuse goodness merely for Him, then it won’t be egoistic at all!

A few days back, I questioned my youngest seven year old sister, who she loves the most, and gave her three options – Ammi (mom), Papa (dad) or yourself. I expected her answer to be either mom or dad but to my amazement, she replied, “I love myself very much.” Surprised, I asked her, “Why is that so?” She gave me a cheeky smile and said, “It’s because that if I love myself first, I can become a good doctor and then take care of them when they grow old.” Her reply made me contemplate deeply, about how loving yourself does good to others. Even as a seven year old, she knew that if she completes her studies first and accomplishes her goal in life, she could love and give proper care to others.

Though the gardener has a deep love for his garden, he still has to take actions for its betterment. That’s how true love works; a few restrictions, precautions and improvements are necessary and then, ultimately we rejoice at its success.

Why should we love ourselves for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)?

To love others, we must first love ourselves; and the more we love others for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), our love for ourselves for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) also increases. Thus, it’s important to know if we love ourselves enough or not.

Prof. Hendricks, Ph.D., a leader in the fields of relationship transformation and body-mind therapies, says that if throughout the day, every day, we find ourselves silently criticizing others, then it’s the biggest clue that we are not loving ourselves enough.

Early Muslims were cognizant of this fact and Hamdun al-Qassar raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) had said,

If a friend among your friends errs, make seventy excuses for them. If your hearts are unable to do this, then know that the shortcoming is in your own selves [Shu’ab al-Iman]

Loving yourself is not about being selfish or arrogant. Loving and accepting yourself will ensure that you are a happy and healthy person. It means that you are content with what Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) has given you, and you embrace your flaws and work to better them. Loving yourself means that you are able to be grateful for your blessings, and wish the same for your fellow brothers and sisters. You understand that you are valuable to the ummah and that your actions can bring benefit to society. Feelings of bitterness and jealousy can never enter your heart, so you are able to love others easily and sincerely.

Why should we love others for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)?

To start with, there is an invaluable reward, as Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says He loves those who love others for His sake, and if Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), Al Wadud (The Loving) starts loving a person, imagine the prolific rewards and eternal contentment which will be honored to him, not only in the dunya but also in the hereafter. Prophet Muhammad ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said,

A man set out to visit a brother (in faith) in another town and Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) sent an angel on his way. When the man met the angel, the latter asked him: Where do you intend to go? He said: I intend to visit my brother in this town. The angel said: Have you done any favor to him? He said: No, I have no desire except to visit him because I love him for the sake of Allah, the Exalted, and Glorious. Thereupon the angel said: I am a messenger to you from Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) (to inform you) that Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) loves you as you love him (for His sake). [Sahih Muslim]

Isn’t this awe-inspiring? By loving someone for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), we can gain the love of the Highest and which love is better than His?

How to love yourself for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)

1. Keep the soul alive by learning more and more

Knowledge is the appetite for our mind and soul; it is alive and healthy once fed, but stops nourishing if the diet is ignored. Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says,

“It is only those who have knowledge among his servants that fear Allah.” [Qur’an: Chapter 35, Verse 28]

There is a direct link between knowledge and fearing Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), the more we gain the fruits of knowledge, the more we will fear Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), which eventually will lead us to maximize our good deeds and build a strong foundation.

2. A healthy mind dwells in a healthy body

Knowledge, soul, and body are directly proportional to one another; if needs of two are fulfilled but the other one is incomplete or poorly done, all of them are negatively affected. Body definitely needs a lot of exercise and activeness to be agile and in shape.

3. Be a person others can rely on

The Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said,

The believers, in their mutual friendship, mercy, and affection, are like one body: if any part of it complains, the rest of the body will also stay awake in pain. [Sahih Muslim]

We have to make sure that if anyone is in need of help, we have to be there to support them. This will eventually increase mutual love, respect and further understanding. There are two types of people who are unforgettable: the ones who help us in times of adversity and the ones who leave us in our downfall. We need to try to be the ones who helps and cares in the times where others’ need us.

Loving others for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)

1. Make excuses for people

Think about your mistakes and faults, how many slips and mistakes we’ve committed, and how we expect for immediate forgiveness and good treatment. So be the person who forgives fast, and only thinks about the positive qualities others’ possess. With dua and sincere intention, Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) will grant us the ability to ignore negative suspicions and help us master this problem. I’ve found that Sr. Yasmin Mogahed, author, said: “Sometimes the reason we can’t forgive is that we don’t see our own flaws. We spend our lives holding onto the wrongs others have done to us, but we don’t see all the wrongs we have also done to others.”

Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says,

“Indeed, those who fear Allah –  when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight.” [Qur’an: Chapter 7, Verse 201]

Whenever you get annoyed by someone, seek refuge in Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) from Satanic whispers, repent to Him subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) and pray to Him subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) to show you the right way to respond.

2. Promote the greeting of peace

The Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said,

“By Him in Whose Hand is my life! You will not enter Jannah until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I inform you of something which, if you do, you will love one another? Promote greetings amongst yourselves.” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi]

It is more commonplace nowadays to not give the Islamic greeting to strangers, and even those whom you know, due to embarrassment or bad blood between people. Whatever your personal feelings are, remember that giving salam fosters love and good will, because you are actively wishing peace for that person. Remember, Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says,

“They will not hear therein [Paradise] ill speech or commission of sin – Only a saying: “Peace, peace.” [Quran: Chapter 56, Verse 25-16]

Don’t we want to be of those in Jannah who give the greeting of peace to others? Therefore, spread the greeting of Paradise now, and in sha Allah the reward will be great.

3. Pray for others in their absence

The Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said,

“By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, none of you has believed until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself of goodness.” [Sunan an-Nasa’i]

How can we develop this kind of attitude? Make a lot of dua (supplications) for others in their absence. This will develop pure love for others in your heart. Also, try to learn about others people’s situations and their wants and needs. This will help you understand why they behave in a particular manner and lead you to make specific dua for their hardships.

4. Let them know you love them

Many a time we don’t verbally express how much we love someone, but this is an important thing to do. Anas ibn Malik raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) said that a man was with the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) when another man passed by.

The first man, “O Messenger ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), indeed I truly love this man.” The Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) asked him, “Have you let him know that?” He said, “No.” The Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said, “Tell him.” He caught up with him and told him, “Truly I love you for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He),” and the man said, “May Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) love you who loves me for His sake.” [Sunan Abi Dawud]

So you express your love to your spouse, your children, your parents, and your brothers and sisters! Simple words will increase love in the hearts, and you will be known to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) and amongst people, that you are a loving person.

Climb up the ladder, go up, up, up!

  • Start recording your daily activities on a diary, two times a day. In the morning, write what you have to do, which additional positive steps you need to take. At night, once you are completely relaxed, take out your diary and note everything down, about what you did.
  • Assess your performance by comparing what you thought you might do and what actually happened, this will give you further knowledge about your mistakes. Frequent recordings will help you be aware of what you are doing and what should actually be done.
  • Clear the fog and visualize the true pathHow abundant these rewards are! However sometimes when quibbles and arguments dig holes between people and when misunderstandings or mistreatment creates further disagreements and distances, it’s hard to think optimistically about that situation. But keeping in mind the prolific amount of rewards in the hereafter, it will be motivating us to be patient and positive.
  • Renew the intention that whatever you are doing, it is just for Allah’s subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) sake and for the ones who might feel it hard, it won’t be though anymore because if you are reminding yourself that each and every act is for the Merciful, automatically when you meet and greet people, this intent will be present in your mind.
  • Exercise by repeating good acts and, most importantly, make the correct intention, this will not only help you love others for His sake, but also give you a very optimistic and nonjudgmental vision about this trivial life.

I hope that you all found this article helpful and I pray to make this journey of success easy and peaceful, Ameen!
